Jan 14, 2003
A quiet day in Jet history, January 14. No games played, so significant coaching moves. Most significant item I oucld find on this date was the signing of Brandon Moore.
Moore, a defensive lineman out of Illinois, had been with the Jets during training camp in 2002, but was cut just prior to the season. He was signed to the practice squad in December.
When they brought him back in January, Coach Herman Edwards suggested a position change to increase his chances of making the team the following season. In February of 2003, the Jets allocated him to NFL Europe to learn the OL position. Moore played in 2003 as an offensive lineman for the Scottish Claymores of NFL Europe and he also played on both sides of the ball with the Carolina Cobras of the Arena League.
He would be resigned and released several times throughout 2003 training camp and the regular season. He would be waived on 3 separate occasions before finally being promoted from the practice squad to the Jets active roster on 10/22/03. Brandon would see his first game action in a 6-0 victory against the Steelers week 14 and make his first start for the Jets in the 03 season finale against the Dolphins.
He would become a regular starter in the 2004 season, and he remained in the lineup until his retirement following the 2012 season. He had signed a contract to play with the Cowboys in the 2013 season, but after spending 10 seasons as a Jet, he decided to retire instead.
Explaining his decision to retire, Moore said, "I was wrestling with it all day, going back and forth with my wife and family. Finally, we decided, 'Let's go ahead and do it.' I didn't sleep at all. I was wrestling with it. I realized it was too late in the game to uproot my family. I called my agent and said, 'I can't do it,' I played the game for 10 years. I lived in a house. I didn't have to go from team to team, so this would've been a big transition for me. You really don't grasp it until you actually agree to something. Then it was like, 'Wow, I have to leave tomorrow for California,' " he said.
