January 17 has been a busy day in Jet History. I will start with the win:
January 17, 2010
On January 17, 2010, the Jets found themselves on the road in the playoffs. They would travel to San Diego to take on the 13-3 Chargers. The Chargers, who won 11 straight after a 2-3 start were a heavy 9-point favorite to beat the Jets and their rookie HC Rex Ryan and rookie QB Mark Sanchez.
What followed was a 3 hour clinic in ground and pound football with big plays in all 3 phases. The Jets wore down the Chargers, pounding out 169 yards on the ground, while throwing for just 100 in the air.
The Jets were scoreless through 30 minutes, falling behind 7-0 when Philip Rivers hit Kris Wilson for a yard TD midway through the 2nd quarter.
The Chargers moved the ball well in the first half, outgaining the Jets by about 100 yards by halftime, but two Nate Kaeding missed field goals, 36 and 57 yarders, kept it a one score game.
The Jets finally got on the scoreboard on the first drive of the 2nd half. Brad Smith gave them good field position, returning the 2nd half kickoff 36 yards to the Jets 40 where the ground and pound offense went to work. 5 Thomas Jones carries got them 20 yards, 8 more yards on a DPI call and a 4 yard Sanchez completion to Keller got them to the 28-yard line. Jay Feely did what Nate Kaeding couldn’t as he nailed a 46 yard FG to cut the lead to 4. 7-3 San Diego.
On the Jets next possession, Mark Sanchez was picked off by Quentin Jammer at the Jets 38 yard line. But Darrelle Revis returned the favor, picking off a Rivers pass intended for VIncent Jackson, and for the 3rd time in the game, SD came away without points after venturing into Jet territory. The Jets couldn’t score off the Revis pick, but Steve Weatherford nailed a 51-yard punt to pin SD at their own 4-yard line.
On 2nd and 9 from their own 5, Rivers pass to Antonio Gates was picked off by Jim Leonhard, who returned it 11 yards and the Jets were in business at the Chargers 16. After 3 Shonn Greene runs and a defensive personal foul, Sanchez found Keller for 2-yards and the Jets had a 10-7 lead.
A 53 yard TD run by rookie Shonn Greene on the Jets next possession gave them an unlikely 17-7 lead with just over 7 minutes left. Greene was the offensive star for the Jets, gaining 128 yards on 23 carries and the one TD. I thought he was going to be special back then -- 135 yards the week before in the win against Cincinnati, 123 this week. Had he not gotten injured against the Colts the following week, maybe, just maybe, the Jets hold their halftime lead.
After another Kaeding missed FG, the Chargers closed the gap on Philip Rivers QB sneak from the 1 with just over two minutes left. Kerry Rhodes recovered the Chargers onside kick, and the JEts ran out the clock, leaving San Diego with an unlikely 17-14 upset win.
"Old-fashioned, ground-and-pound football," Ryan called it. "Sometimes when you hit the quarterback the whole team feels it," he added.
“We knew it was only a matter of time before they'd break,” said Damien Woody. “There was no way we were going to be denied,"
