January 21, 1985
The Jets opened up the 1984 season by winning 6 of their first 8 games. So when the promising season vanished as the Jets dropped 7 of their last 8, some changes were expected. Two weeks after the season ended, the Jets would part ways with three of their defensive coaches.
LB coach Ralph Baker and DB coach Billy Baird were fired and defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Joe Gardi “resigned by mutual agreement” according to a team announcement.
“I deeply appreciate all that Joe has done for me and for the Jets, but Joe and I agreed that it was mutually beneficial for both the club and Joe to make the change at this time,” said HC Joe Walton.
And with that, the Jets began the search for a new defensive coordinator. On January 21, that search concluded as the Jets hired veteran defensive coach, Bud Carson. Carson was best known for helping to shape the Steelers Steel Curtain defense as their DC from 1973-1977.
“We feel good about getting a man of Bud’s experience and quality,” said Walton. “He has been the defensive coordinator in 9 playoff seasons including 3 Super Bowls so it shows he is a quality coach who has done it.”
His hiring paid immediate dividends as the Jets made the playoffs in 1985 with an 11-5 record and the 3rd ranked scoring defense in the league. He led the Jets defense for 4 seasons, leaving the team after the 1988 season to join the Cleveland Browns as their head coach.

Yeah, Carson was a good coach and had some solid years with the Jets, but that 5 game collapse at the end of the 86 season -- man the defense was putrid during that stretch. Offense sucked too, with Kenny O turning the ball over 3 or 4 times a game, but defenses didn't stop anyone in that last month.
