January 22, 20093 days after accepting the position as head coach of the Jets, Rex Ryan brought Mike Pettine over from Baltimore to be his defensive coordinator. Mike had served on Rex's staff in Baltimore as Outside Linebacker Coach from 2005-08. The first two years in NY, Rex and Pettine put together great aggressive defenses that carried the Jets to consecutive playoff runs that fell just short of the Super Bowl. In 09 & 10, Jets defenses ranked 1st and 3rd in total defense and 1st and 6th in points allowed. The next two seasons, the Jets struggled -- their defenses were top 10 in yardage, but ranked 20th in points allowed in both 11 & 12. Pettine left the Jets after his contract expired in 2012, joining the Bills for the 2013 season as defensive coordinator. He spent one year in Buffalo before accpeting the head coaching position with the Cleveland Browns, a position from which he was just recently relieved.
