January 25, 1965
On this date in 1965, Jets first round draft pick, Joe Namath, would undergo his first knee surgery, the result of an injury suffered in the 4th game of his senior year at Alabama.
The procedure, which was to remove damaged cartilage from the knee was not expected to impact Joe's rookie year. It was a routine procedure that was expected to take less than two weeks recovery time. Joe, who would be plagued by knee injuries throughout his career, would be ready to go for the start of his rookie season in 1965.

That's a little misleading. His knee was messed up, but back then they didn't repair torn ligaments. Instead the just cut them out. After examining Namath's knee in the bathroom at Toot Shor's the jets team doctor told Namath that the knee would likely limit him to a 3 or 4 year career.
