January 27, 1970
The New York Jets select Steve Tannen, Defensive Back, Florida. The 1970 NFL Draft took place over two days beginning on January 27. With the 20th pick, the Jets selected Steve Tannen. Tannen, who played 5 years in the NFL, all for the Jets, would start every game in his rookie season. His best season came in 1972, when he was 3rd in the league with 7 interceptions, despite being slowed with shoulder injuries during the season. In the second round, they selected Rich Caster, TE out of Jackson State. Caster played 8 seasons with the Jets as both TE & WR, catching 245 passes for over 4,400 yards -- an average of better than 18 yards per catch, with 36 TDs. Rich would prove to be one of the better picks of that draft. He was the 8th TE/WRr selected. His career total of 5,330 yards was 2nd only in the draft class to Ken Burrough who went 10th overall to New Orleans. His 322 receptions and 45 TDs were 3rd behind only Burrough and 24th overall pick Raymond Chester. Other players the Jets acquired in that draft include Penn State LB John Ebersole & Idaho State WR Eddie Bell. The Jets complete 1970 draft: Eddie Bell would also prove to be good value for a 9th rounder (33rd receiver picked) finishing top 10 in career receiving yards and TDs and #11 in receptions from among the 1970 draft class. Other notable selections in the 1970 draft were two Hall of Famers, both were drafted by the same team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, who selected QB Terry Bradshaw with the #1 overall pick, and CB Mel Blount selected with the 53rd overall pick (1st pick of the 3rd round). A 3rd HOFer who came out in 1970 went undrafted. Jim Langer, C out of South Dakota State signed with Cleveland as an undrafted free agent. He was released in the preseason, but caught on with Miami during the 1970 season. He would become the starting C for the Dolphins during their undefeated 1972 season.
