The New York Jets agreed to a trade with the Chargers that sent defensive linemen Abdul Salaam and Kenny Neil to San Diego in exchange for their 2nd round pick. #39 overall in the upcoming draft.
With the pick, the Jets selected TE Glenn Dennison from the University of Miami, Dennison played one season with the Jets, catching just 16 passes in his rookie season. He never played for the Jets after his rookie season. He also played one season in Washington before ending his career with the Amsterdam Crusaders in 1989.
Dennison is a graduate of Beaver Falls (PA) High School - the same school as a slightly more successful Jet, Joe Namath. Both are members of the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.
In that 1984 draft, the Jets had two first and two second round picks. In the first round they selected DB Russell Carter (10 overall) and Ron Faurot (15 overall). In addition to Dennison, their other second round pick was the only player out of the bunch, C Jim Sweeney out of Pitt.
While the Jets were disappointed with the productivity they got out of Dennison, it is still better than what the Chargers got out of Neil and Salaam, as neither played a game for the Chargers. Salaam had been a part of the NY Sack Exchange and had started 72 games from 1977 - 82 until injury derailed his career. He was cut by the Chargers during the pre-season.
As for Neil, he asked for a trade from San Diego, and the Chargers tried to oblige, agreeing to send him to SF for a draft pick, but he failed his physical and the trade was nullifed. He never played for San Diego, opting instead to play for the USFL's Portland Breakers. He would return to the NFL for the 1987 season and play 1 game for the Houston Oilers.
