The Jets signed free agent offensive tackle, David Williams. The official free agency period would not start for another day, but the Jets got off to an early start on their rebuild. Williams had been released by the Houston Oilers prior to the start of FA and was eligible to be signed. It was the first of several high profile free agent signings made by the Jets under head coach Rich Kotite as an attempt to rebuild coming off of a disastrous 3-13 season.
As the free agency period began, the Jets would add QBs Neil O'Donnell & Frank Reich, OT Jumbo Elliott and WR Jeff Graham. The rebuild didn't work. Elliott was the only signing that worked out well as the Jets finished with a 1-15 record in 1996.
