February 17, 1983
Earlier in the month, offensive coordinator Joe Walton had been promoted to Head Coach when Walt Michaels resigned. On this day, Feb 17, 1983, Walton added 3 assistant coaches to his staff:
OL Coach Jim Ringo RB Coach Ray Callahan WR Coach Rich Kotite
Walton would act as his own offensive coordinator in 83 & 84, but would promote Kotite to that position for the 85 - 89 seasons. He would leave NY after 89 to join the Philadelphia Eagles, when Bruce Coslet replaced Walton as Jets HC. Unfortunately, it was not the last Jet fans would see of Kotite, who would return to the Jets as HC in 1995 & 96.
Gotta love the offseason -- all these good memories.

both kotite and walton were pretty good offensive coordinators. walton was a better head coach than his record indicates given all of the turmoil in the nfl during his tenure. kotite just never had it as a head coach.

What gets me is how bad he faltered with the Eagles as hc and then he gets hired here - what was Hess thinking?

That's what happens when your owner makes unilateral coaching decisions without the input of his GM.
