A busy Leap Day for GM Mike Tannenbaum and the New York Jets. In two separate trades, the Jets sent Jonathan Vilma to New Orleans and acquired Kris Jenkins from Carolina.
In the Vilma deal, the Jets received a 4th round pick in 2008 and a conditional pick in 2009. The 2009 pick would end up a 3rd rounder. The Jets sent the 4th round pick to GB along with a 2nd round pick in the 08 draft to move into the end of the first round and select Dustin Keller. In a 2nd draft day trade with GB, the Jets would re-acquire the 4th rounder and select Dwight Lowery. All GB did with the Jets 2nd was acquire Jordy Nelson. And with the 3rd round pick in 2009, the Jets would deal that to Detroit to move up in the 3rd to select Shonn Greene. With the Jets pick, Detroit took DeAndre Levy. So, in a trade between the Jets and the Saints, the two winners were Detroit and Green Bay.
In order to acquire Jenkins, the Jets sent their 3rd and 5th round picks in 08 to Carolina. In Jenkins, the Jets got a great nose tackle who struggled to stay on the field due to injuries. He played in all 16 games for the Jets in 2008, but only played in 7 more games over the 09 & 10 seasons combined as his career was cut short due to injury. He retired after the 2010 season. With the two picks acquired from the Jets, Carolina selected DB Charles Godfrey and TE Gary Barnidge, who emerged this year with 79 receptions & over 1,000 yards for Cleveland after a very quiet first 7 years of his career.
