March 13, 1998
The New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles completed a trade that would send Hugh Douglas to the Eagles in exchange for the Eagles 2nd and 5th round picks in the 1998 draft. Douglas had been a rising star for the Jets, finishing his rookie season, 1995, with 10 sacks and winning the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award. He was a 4-3 defensive end, however and he didn’t fit well in new Jets coach Bill Parcells 3-4 scheme.
The Jets were looking to add draft picks in 1998, having given up their first two picks to the New England Patriots. Their first rounder was compensation for RB Curtis martin who had signed as a restricted free agent, and their second also went to NE as compensation for the Jets hiring Parcells.
The Eagles, for their part, were desperate for a proven pass rusher, having whiffed on pass rushers with their first round picks in 1995 (Mike Mamula) and 1997 (Jon Harris). Douglas went on to have a solid career with the Eagles, recording 54.5 sacks in 6 seasons.
As for the Jets, the traded the Eagles 2nd (#41 overall) for the Steelers 2nd (#56), 3rd and 5th rounders. It looked like a solid deal for the Jets, turning Douglas into 4 picks: a 2nd, 3rd and two 5th round picks. It looked like a solid deal, however, none of the 4 picks worked out. With the 4 picks, the Jets selected:
2nd Round: DE, Dorian Boose, Washington State
3rd Round: DB Kevin Williams, Oklahoma State
5th Round: LB Casey Dailey, Northwestern
5th Round: OT John Bateman, BYU
Bateman never played in the NFL. Dailey’s NFL career consisted of 6 games in the 1999 season. Boose played 4 seasons in the NFL, 3 with the Jets, playing in 36 games and recording 13 tackles, 0 sacks and no starts. As for Williams, he looked like he might be a winner, with an interception in the first game of his rookie season. It would be the only interception of his 5-year NFL career. A career that saw him mostly as a kick returner for the Jets. He did have one 97-yard KR TD for eh JEts in the 2000 season against Buffalo.
