March 19, 2003Jets Wide Receiver Laveranues Coles signed with the Washington Redskins as a restricted free agent. When the Jets refused to match the Skins offer sheet, they were awarded the Skins first round pick (#13 overall) as compensation. The Jets went into the 2003 draft with two first rounders, #13 and their own pick, #22. They packaged the two picks, along with their 4th rounder in a trade with the Bears to move up to #4 overall to select DT Dewayne Robertson of Kentucky. Although Robertson started for 5 seasons with the Jets, he never lived up to his high draft spot. If we wanted a DT, we could have stayed in the 8th spot and selected Kevin Williams from Oklahoma State who went on to an all pro career in Minnesota. As for the Bears, they did not fare much better in the trade. They traded the #13 pick, moving back to 14 to select Penn State DL Michael Haynes, who played just 3 years in the league, making only 4 starts. With the Jets pick at 22, the Bears chose QB Rex Grossman, a bad QB who rode a great defense to a Super Bowl appearance in 2006. The 13th overall pick wound up with New England who selected Ty Warren.

laveraneus was a pretty darn good receiver for the jets. he had good hands and speed. the packaging of the drft choices is interesting and shows the folly of drafting for need. the jets would've been much better off keeping the two first rounders and drafting the bpa.
no comment about robertson. he had bad knees coming out of college and really shouldn't have been picked so high. he had some good games for the jets. at least he wasn't gholston.

If they had picks 13 and 22, how could they have stayed at 8?

Fucking bowling ball with butter knives. I believe the Jets wanted Andre Johnson over Robertson, but were happy taking either. Of course we got stuck with the bust.

I remember I was in Washington for our first game that year he was traded, watched us get our ass kicked by Lav in a bar in DC.
Totally fucking sucked. We got abused in that deal, and then the Moss fiasco afterward.
What a cluster fuck.
