April 22
Thankfully, April 22 is not draft day this year. Three times in the history of the NFL, the college draft began on April 22, and all 3 times, the Jets busted, at least at the top of the draft.
The first time was in 1990, when the Jets, coming off of a 4-12 record in 1989, held the #2 overall pick. It is bad enough that they picked Penn State RB Blair Thomas at #2 overall, especially after Cortez Kennedy and Junior Seau, who went 3 & 5 respectively, went on to Hall of Fame careers. In his 4 seasons as a Jet, Thomas gained just 2,009 yards and scored only 5 TDs. Not the return you want with the 2 overall pick.
The worst pick in the draft might have been their next one. With the 3rd pick in the 2nd round, the Jets selected WR Reggie Rembert of West Virginia. Rembert and his agent believed that he should have gone in round 1, and held out for round 1 money. The Jets, unable to reach agreement on a contract with Rembert, dealt him to Cincinnati for LB Joe Kelly & OT Scott Jones. Still looking to add a wide receiver, after they were unsuccessful at signing Rembert, the Jets turned to the supplemental draft and selected Rob Moore in the 1st round, surrendering their 1st round pick in 1992, which cost the Jets the opportunity to draft Brett Favre in 1992.
To be fair, the Jets had some pretty good picks in the later rounds in 1990: Dwayne White and Roger Duffy both became OL starters for the Jets, and Terrance Mathis had a nice career, even though his best years came in Atlanta. But we were picking #2 overall and missed on the first two picks, and that Rembert pick, costing us a shot at Favre. Quite possibly the worst 2nd round pick ever made by the Jets or anyone else.
And, while I am on the subject of worst second round picks ever, the 2010 draft also began on April 22, when the Jets took Vladimir Ducasse in the 2nd and Kyle Burnt Toast Wilson in the 1st.
The 3rd draft to take place on April 22: The 1995 draft, also known as the Kyle Brady draft. The did hit on Hugh Douglas with their 2nd #1 in that draft, and Matt O'Dwyer was a solid pick in the 2nd, but 1995 will always be remembered as the Kyle Brady draft. Here they are, the three 4/22 drafts.
Looking forward to bigger and better things next week.
