May 2, 1978
4 days ago, the Jets drafted LB Darron Lee out of Ohio State. Lee is the 4th first round pick the Jets have taken from Ohio State. We all remember the two most recent picks, Center Nick Mangold in 2006 and LB Vernon Gholston in 2008. But to find the first Ohio State 1st round pick to the Jets, we have to go way back to 1978. 38 years ago today, the Jets selected Ohio State OT Chris Ward with the 4th overall pick in the draft. Ward went on to a solid career as the Jets starting left tackle for 6 years, from 1978 - 83 before finishing his career in 1984.
Similar to this weekend, the Jets also turned to a Nittany Lion. With their 3rd rounder, they picked TE Mickey Shuler from Penn State. Shuler's career got off to a slow start, as he caught just 57 passes and started 25 games in his first 5 seasons as a Jet. By the time he was done, Shuler would play 12 seasons with the Jets, catching over 460 passes. He finished his career playing two seasons, 1990 & 1991 with Philadelphia. Here is the rest of the 1983 draft class:
1 4 Chris Ward T Ohio St.
2 31 Mark Merrill LB Minnesota
3 61 Mickey Shuler TE Penn St.
4 88 Dodie Donnell RB Nebraska
5 113 Randy Sidler LB Penn St.
6 140 Bobby Jackson DB Florida St.
6 142 Gregg Robinson DE Dartmouth
7 169 Levi Armstrong DB UCLA
7 170 Jim Earley RB Michigan St.
8 197 Derrick Gaffney WR Florida
8 203 Mike Mock LB Texas Tech
8 213 Roy Eppes DB Clemson
9 225 Reggie Grant DB Oregon
9 227 Neil Hutton DB Penn St.
10 254 Louis Richardson DE Florida St.
11 281 Pat Ryan QB Tennessee
12 311 Alan Williams P Florida
A couple of pretty good mid/late round picks in Bobby Jackson, Derrick Gaffney and Pat Ryan.

bobby jackson couldn't stay on the field. they landed 5 decent players in 12 rounds. i wonder how that stacks up with recent drafts.

If I'm not mistaken it was Chris Ward whose helmet was yanked off his head by a 'roid ragin' Lyle Alzado.

Thanks for the pic!
Looks like Mickey Shuler is trying to assist Ward.
