May 6, 1986The Jets waived 3-time All Pro and 5-time Pro Bowl RT, Marvin Powell. Powell, who held out of training camp and into the season in 1985, had an poor year the hold out, and hte Jets decided to cut ties with the former star. He was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so the Jets pulled him back off waivers and two weeks later worked out a trade with Tampa. The Jets would receive a conditional draft pick which turned out to be an 8th rounder in 1987. Powell played in 9 games for Tampa over the course of two seasons, retiring after the 1987 season. The Jets wound up with an 8th round pick from Tampa, #196 overall. They selected Eddie Hunter a running back from Virignia Tech. Hunter would get into 3 games in his Jet career, rushing 48 times for 169 yards in the 1987 season.

all of that player unrest and the advent of the usfl really messed the nfl up. powell was a good player and should've been able to play a couple more seasons after he was released. he and chris ward were the bookend tackles that walt michaels was fond of calling them.

Yep - in the '82 playoff game w/ the Raiders, he and Alzado really had a war going on - good times!
