Since the conversation on his selection during the Runway Crash turned into a clusterfuck I'm wondering what the regulars here think honestly about his selection. Most have been very quiet and since I value everyone's opinion here, let loose. I had him as one of my two players not to draft over a month before the draft, so I wanted to like him after the pick. I've watched every game since then and still hate this pick to the core....moreso than any other first rounder over the last twenty years. He's a safety/Lb hybrid that has no instincts. Plays mostly in a zone coverage scheme and is terrible at it because of his hesitance dropping back and reading the play. In the run game he gets enveloped by lineman and has no chance. Poor tackler who loves to swipe players ankles. He was drafted strictly for his measurables and that rarely works out. I wish people would stop comparing him to Deon Buccanon because they are nothing alike. DB was a ballhawking safety with great instincts and the ability too give up his body for the tackle with nice size for a safety.
What is Darron Lee?

I'm afraid the silence since this thread was posted speaks volumes regarding this pick. This is a forum that encourages back and forth discussion in a civil manner, yet everyone doesn't have an informed opinion on Lee based on his tape? Our first round pick....just after the draft.
Am I the only outlier that hates this pick? Does anyone like it, and why?

I can't speak for others, but about .30 seconds after the Lee pick - I disengaged emotionally. After Hackenberg, I just about left this planet... So inspiration to feel anything is low. I'm working on it, day by day.
I didn't "hate" Lee the prospect going into the draft quite as much as you, but I certainly let my feelings be known on spending a first round pick on these tweener/hybrid/developmental players on defense. Wasn't interested.
I've adopted a "OK, Mike..." mentality. Arms folded. Chin up. Pants hiked up a smidge... "If you say so. Show me."

I didn't like the pick at the time, and I am still not thrilled with it. I am not a big film study guy like some others in this forum, but I have watched some film on Lee. I can see the upside, but in my opinion he is far from a finished product. As you mention, he is not going to shed many blockers trying to defend the run, and while he has great straight line speed -- he can make big plays when he has a straight shot at the ballcarrier or QB, but he appears to be hesitant/tentative at times. He may be a ble to get away with a one or two beat hesitation in college, but he will have to be more instinctive in the pros. Great speed does not necessarily mean great cover ability, and I have not seen his ability to stay with receivers coming our of his breaks.
Hopefully the kid is a fast learner. Only played the position two seasons as a linebacker, so hopefully with experience, he will become more instinctive over time. Whether I like the pick of not doesn't matter at this point. I see a lot of the so called experts who loved the pick, and a handful who didn't. I am going to hope the majority are right about him and that our coaching staff can develop the upside and develop it quickly.

Now we just have to pray that it's because of inexperience at the position and Bowles can coach him up. Probably easier said than done.

Going to reserve judgement on this and any of the picks until I see game action.
But I'm not optimistic.

I had never heard of him before his name was called. My initial reaction was he seemed awful small for a 3/4 LB, so I figured he must be fast, which turned out to be true.
I have concerns that are mostly belayed by his measurable s, wonderlick, being a big school guy, being projected as a mid first round pick and the fact that Mac and crew think highly enough of him to pull the trigger.
Apparently guys with his skill set are the new trend, and Bowles wants that on his D. Seeing how the draft is basically a crap shoot, I am optimistic. Hope it works out.

Going to reserve judgement on this and any of the picks until I see game action. Contrary to popular belief I'm guessing all of the posters here feel the same way. There is nothing wrong with posting your disdain for a pick in this forum especially before the draft even happened, and then hoping you are dead fucking wrong to the core when our Jets select said player. If we drafted a guy like Treadwell I would have been ecstatic in praising our FO, I just cant't do it with Lee. TBH I'm worried about what Mac is doing and how he is drafting. He inherited a great cap situation and now we have too restructure/cut vets just to fit our rookies under the cap let alone the mention of Fitz. He better be right with his selections, or else he will go down like every other GM we have had over the last half century that hasn't won shit. Sorry but the last paragraph was not aimed a you, just general venting.

In his defense he was projected as a top 20 pick and I don't have any qualms about his size, my problem is with the player. Only time will tell but I hate drafting an ILB that is a total project in the first round. We could have drafted football players with his skillset in the later rounds.
