May 13, 1996
The Jets signed two free agents, RB Reggie Cobb from the Jaguars and OL Harry Boatswain from the Eagles.
Cobb, a former first round pick of the Buccaneers, had a disappointing career. He never lived upto his draft slot with Tampa and was selected by Jacksonville in the 1995 expansion draft. He signed with the Jets as a free agent, expected to compete for the playing time with starter Adrian Murrell. After leading the team in rushing during the preseason, Cobb never was able tog et going when the regular season began. Rushing just 25 times for 85 yards in his one season as a Jet. He retired at age 28 following the '96 season.
As for Boatswain, he was thrilled to become a Jet. He had grown up in Brooklyn as a fan of the Jets. Still following the team's fortunes even after he was drafted in the 5th round of the 1991 draft by SF. After 3 seasons in SF and 1 in Philly, Boatswain was thrilled to come home and play for Rich Kotite and the Jets. His Jets debut didn't go well. He was forced to play out of position at left tackle after an injury to starter Jumbo Elliott in week 1. The Broncos crushed the Jets in that one, 31-6 in a game in which Boatswain and the Jets line gave up 9 sacks. He would only play the 1 season for the Jets. Like Cobb, his career would end after that 1996 season at age 27.
A huge Jet fan growing up, finally gets to live out his dream, playing for his favorite team, and he joins them for the worst season in franchise history. Only the Jets could do that to a lifelong loyal fan. He passed away in 2005, suffering a fatal heart attack at the much too young age of 36. RIP, Harry.
