June 5, 1973
In a trade with the New Orleans Saints, the Jets sent record setting punter Steve O'Neal to the Saints with back-up QB Bob Davis to New Orleans in exchange for punter Julian Fagan and WR Margene Adkins. Adkins and Fagan both played one season for the Jets, the 1973 season. In his one season as a Jet, Adkins was primarily a special teamer, returning 31 kicks for an average of 19.8 yards per return. He also had 6 receptions for 109 yards. Fagan punted 71 times for the Jets for an average of 37.1 per kick.
As for Davis and O'Neal, they both played one season in New Orleans. Davis was their 3rd string QB, backing up Archie Manning and Bobby Scott. O.Neal punted 81 times with a long of 71 yards, impressive, but still well short of the NFL record 98 yarder he hit for the Jets as a rookie against Denver in 1969.
