June 7, 1978
With the 6th overall pick in the 1974 NFL draft, the Jets selected DT Carl Barzilauskas of Indiana. On this date, June 7 in 1978, the Jets decided it was time to move on from Barzilauskas as they agreed to trade him to the Packers in exchange for two 1979 draft picks - a 4th round pick and a 5th round pick. The Jets got the better of this deal. In the 4th round, they selected DB Johnny Lynn of UCLA. Lynn played 8 years for the Jets from 79 - 86. After he retired, he moved on to coaching, where he will be starting his 30th season as an NFL assistant coach. He is currently the DB coach with the Raiders. In the 5th round, they selected Sam Houston State LB, Stan Blinka. Blinka played 5 seasons with the Jets, starting 60 games, before being traded to Denver in 1984 for a 6th round pick (Rich Miano). Blinka was released by the Broncos, and ended his football career with the Denver Gold of the USFL. As for Barzilauskas and the Packers, he played 2 seasons and 21 games for the Packers before his career came to an end in 1979.
