June 10, 1971A couple of days earlier, the Jets thought they had retained All AFL Defensive Lineman Verlon Biggs. After playing out his option in 1970, the Jets and Biggs agreed to terms on a deal for 1971, but Biggs didn't sign his Jets contract, and on this day, June 10, 1971, he signed instead with George Allen and the Washington Redskins. Verlon was one of several great, underrated players on the Jets championship defense of the late 60s. Biggs would play 4 seasons with Washington before retiring at the end of the 1974 season. The Jets received compensation for Biggs, a 1st round pick in the 72 draft and a 2nd rounder in 73. With the first round pick, the Jets selected Michael Taylor, LB out of Michigan, whose NFL career consisted of just 22 games for the Jets in 2 seasons. They traded the 2nd round pick in 73 to New Orleans in exchange for DB Delles Howell and DE Richard Neal. Neal would become a starter on the Jets DL for the next 5 seasons, while Howell played 3 seasons for the Jets as CB & FS.
