June 12, 1991In a trade with the Phoenix Cardinals, the Jets acquired FS Lonnie Young. Young had been a 12th round pick of the St Louis Cardinals in 1985, and quickly established himself as a starter in the Cardinals secondary during his rookie year. Young wore out his welcome in Phoenix during minicamp prior to the 1991 season. He was asked to change positions to CB and refused. Less than a month later, he was shipped to the Jets in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick (likely the Jets 9th rounder in 1992, WR Tyrone Williams). Young remained at FS for the Jets for 3 seasons. His biggest moment as a Jet may have come during the 1992 season, the week following Dennis Byrd's horrific injury. The 3-9 Jets took on the 9-3 Bills. In an emotional game dedicated to Byrd, the Jets pulled off an unlikely 24-17 upset. Young had a key fumble recovery in the 3rd quarter to set up a go ahead TD. Young played for the Chargers in 1994 and then finished his career with two more seasons as a Jet, 1995 & 96.
