June 14, 1988Jim Kensil, Jets team president, resigned his position for medical reasons on this date, June 14, in 1988. He was replaced by Steve Gutman. Kensil took over as Team President in 1977. Kensil helped to restore the team to respectability, as he built a contender that ended the Jets 12-year playoff drought in 1981 and came within a game and a muddy field of the Super Bowl in 1982. Towards the end of his tenure, Kensil and the entire Jet front office & coaching staff came under heavy criticism for three late season collapses in his last 4 seasons with the team. Kensil retired in order to treat a heart condition. He passed in 1997 at the age of 66.

kensil at least got the ball rolling by hiring michaels and turning the jets from a club to a professional team.
