June 15, 1936On this day in 1936, the late Johnny Sample was born. Sample is the only player ever to win an NFL championship (with the Colts in 1958) and an AFL Championship and Super Bowl (both with the Jets in 1968). He also played in 3 of the most memorable games in NFL history: the 1958 NFL Championship when his Colts beat the Giants 23-17 in OT, plus the Heidi game in 1968 and the Jets Super Bowl III victory. Sample's best moment as a Jet came when he intercepted an Earl Morrall pass in the red zone late in the 2nd quarter of the SB to preserve the Jets 7-0 lead. But to me, his most memorable play came about 3 months earlier, when the Jets hosted the Chargers at Shea Stadium and his interception in the end zone saved a 23-20 Jets victory. I was sitting in the stands with my dad in back of that end zone -- it was my first Jet game.
