June 19, 1938Edward "Wahoo" Mcdaniel was born on this date, June 19 in 1938. He would have been 78 years old today, however, he passed in 2002 of renal failure. McDaniel was on the waiting list for a new kidney at the time. His lived a flamboyant and eventful 64 years, as both a pro football player and a professional wrestler. He was even coached at one time by a future President of the US -- his playing days began in Midland Texas as a running back on a Pony League team that was coached by George Herbert Walker Bush. McDaniel only played for the Jets for two seasons after being acquired in a trade with the Denver Broncos prior to the 64 season. Wahoo became a fan favorite in his first game as a Jet in the 1964 (which was also the Jets first game at Shea Stadium) after every tackle, the public address announcer asked "Tackle by who?" and the crowd chanted, "Wahoo". Wahoo was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the expansion draft prior to the 1966 season, ending his two years as a Jet. In a SI interview a year before his death, he remembered his two years in NY as the "happiest years of my life."
