June 29, 1965
Having drafted their QB of the future a few months earlier -- some kid out of Alabama, the Jets decided it was time to move on from back-up QB Pete Liske. Liske has the distinction of being the last Jets QB to start a game prior to the selection of Namath in the ‘65 draft. He started in a 24-7 week 14 loss to the Chiefs. He completed 9 of 14 passes for 55 yards and 1 int in that game. It was his only start as a Jet He was traded to the Bills on this date, June 29, 1965, for DB John Sklopan. Neither man ever played for his new team. Liske decided to go farther north than Buffalo, opting instead to sign with the Toronto Argonauts. He enjoyed quite a bit of success in Canada -- after moving on to the Calgary Stampeders where he set a CFL record with 40 TD passes in the 1967 season, a season in which he won the CFL’s most outstanding player award. His TD record would stand for over 25 years until Doug Flutie surpassed him in 1993. He returned to the NFL in 1969 and played 4 seasons, primarily as a back up with Denver and Philadelphia. After retiring from the NFL as a player, Liske returned as a referee for several years in the mid-1980s.
