June 30, 1967
This one is a little bit confusing. I maintain a database of every Jet/Titan transaction going back to 1960, but some of the entries from the 1960s can be a bit sketchy. The database shows that the Jets and Chiefs made a deal on this date, June 30, 1967, where the Jets sent C Mike Hudock to the Chiefs in exchange for KR/DB/HB Solomon Brannan. However the database also shows that Hudock was lost in the expansion draft to the Dolphins a year earlier and played the 1966 season with Miami. And it also shows that the Jets traded him to the Dolphins in 1967. He may have been dealt back to the Jets in the offseason before he was in turn sent to the Chiefs. Since I got nothing else for this date (other than Louie Aguiar's birthday), I am going with the Hudock trade.
Mike Hudock had been a starter on the original Titan team in 1960 and remained the team's starting Center for the first 6 seasons of the franchise's history.
The Jets likely left him unprotected in the expansion draft because they had a young guy out of Hofstra that was ready to step in. When Hudock left for KC, John Schmitt came in and held the Center job for the next 8 seasons. So it appears the remarkable stability at the Center position actually started with the birth of the franchise back in 1960. Two years after Schmitt moved on the GB, Joe Fields came in to anchor the OL. Fields gave way to Sweeney. Sweeney to Roger Duffy for 3 seasons, then Duffy to Mawae and Mawae to Mangold. The history of the franchise in 7 players. And it all started with Mike Hudock.
As for the man the Jets acquired in exchange for Hudock, Solomon Brannan. He played one season for the Jets, appearing in 12 games and returning 9 kicks in the 1967 season.
