July 18, 1969We all know the story. Namath's ownership of Bachelors III. Rozelle's demand that he sell his interest. Namath's retirement announcement in June 1969. On this date, July 18, 1969, Joe decided to accept the commissioner's demands and sell his interest in the night club, and return to the NFL and the Jets. "I've done nothing wrong," he said, "but because of the way some of the people have written and some of the things that have been said in the past, and because this has caused so much trouble for football and for me, we feel we should divorce ourselves of the restaurant at this time, though everything that's been said about myself having dice games is wrong." (Actually, there has been no public suggestion that Namath himself was involved in dice games, although enforcement authorities have said that such games were held in Namath's shared East 76th Street apartment.)With those words, as reported in Sports Illustrated at the time, Joe was back and would return to the Jets training camp.

He would have been the coolest dude on the planet and the legend would have loomed large if he would have stayed retired.

the thing is namath had a ton of success fairly early and never achieved even close to the same success. a lot of the problem is that whole jets sb team aged at the same time just about the whole team was gone by 73 and the new players weren't nearly as good. and, of course, weeb handed the team over to his lame son-in law.
