July 20, 1968Mike Taliaferro had been the Jets starting QB at the beginning of 1965 season. Before the season's end, however, he was replaced by a rookie QB out of Alabama. After spending the better part of three seasons as Namath's back-up, Taliaferro asked to be traded to a team where he would have a chance to start. On this date, July 20 in 1968, the Jets obliged him, sending him to the Boston Patriots in exchange for 13 year veteran QB Babe Parilli. Parilli gave the Jets the experienced back-up they needed -- he played for two seasons with the team, backing up Namath in '68 & '69. As for Taliaferro, he would start 25 games for the Patriots over three seasons, finishing with an 8-17 record in his starts.
