July 22, 2013Geno Smith signed his 4-year rookie deal on this date, July 22, in 2013. A couple of weeks later he was the starter by default after Sanchez hurt his shoulder in pre-season. And now, he may be starter by default again this year. Really interested in seeing how he looks in preseason next month.

wait a second. not that i'm such a genot fan but fitz was the qb starter by default because of genots broken jaw. as i recall genot had the job won. obviously we'll see what genot shows up. i think that the offense has gotten better since last season and there is every reason to believe genot will play better than we've seen.

Fair point, but if Geno is going to be the guy this year, I would like it to be because he goes out in the preseason and wins the job. Not because our only alternatives are worse. Whether Fitz comes back or not, I would like to see Geno prove to us in preseason that he is not the same guy we remember from most of 2013 & 14. |

Did Lee sign his deal yet? If not then I'd guess we're getting close with Camp just a week away. Knowing that Geno signed his deal in late July makes me less concerned that there could be some kind of issue with Darron Lee getting a deal done.

I assume it will get done in the next few days. If he remains unsigned and is not at camp later this week, then I will be concerned. Apparently the top 19 guys all have fully guaranteed contracts, but beginning at number 21 (Will Fuller), contracts are only partially guaranteed. Fuller's contract is 4-years/$10.2MM with $9.4MM guaranteed. Falling at 20, the issue is likely over the amount guaranteed as the total value will fall between Fuller and Shaq Lawson at 19. |
