July 23, 19877 years earlier, in 1980, the Jets had two first round picks, #13 was their own pick and they had acquired the Broncos #20 in trade for QB Matt Robinson. With Richard Todd established as the starting QB, the JEts decided to get him a weapon and they sent the two picks to SF to move up to #2 to select WR (and Olympic Gold Medalist sprinter) Johnny Lam Jones from Texas. Unfortunately he proved to be better as a sprinter than a football player, catching just 138 passes in 5 seasons as a Jet. After missing the 85 & 86 seasons with injury, on this date, July 23 in 1987, the Jets decided to move on from Jones, sending him to San Francisco in exchange for a 5th round pick in the 1988 draft. Jones would be waived by the Niners in August. He then signed with the Cowboys, but was placed on IR and never played again in the NFL. The Jets sent the 5th rounder they received from SF to the Raiders on draft day in 88 to move up in the draft to select DB James Hasty. The Raiders selected UCLA DB Dennis Price, who would play two years with the Jets after being acquired in a 1991 trade.

Quite frankly I'm amazed the Jets were able to get a 5th round pick for Jones. He hadn't even played for 2 seasons and when he did he had minimal impact.

The original Stephen Hill. hill wishes he could get so open. no doubt that jones had speed to spare and i remember seeing him go deep, todd throw a perfect ball, only to have it go right between his hands. i'm surprised jones lasted so long in the nfl. i'm also surprised they got a first round pick for robinson. i always thought robinson was the better choice than todd for qb. robinson seemed to be much more comfortable in his skin. on the other hand he pulled some stunts that put him in michaels' dog house.

Yup, one of the writers in an article from the 80s said he ran like a deer but had hands like one too. Thought that was a great description.

He didn't have the mindset of a warrior - did not like getting touched.
