August 5, 1995Yes, it was just a preseason game, but 21 years ago today, NY Jets Coach Rich Kotite led the Jets to the field for the first time in the 1995 preseason opener in Tampa against the Buccaneers. And the Jets did something they would not do very often in the regular season under Kotite, they won the game, defeating the Bucs 9-3. The Jets won thanks to a short passing game, a stout defense and the leg of Nick Lowery. Starting QB Boomer Esiaison finished 8 of 12 for 70 yards with 1 pick in limited action, using primarily TEs and RBs. Boomer did not complete one pass to a WR before giving way to Bubby Brister in the 2nd quarter. The game also marked the preseason debut for two rookie 1st round draft picks who will always seem to be linked in the minds of many Jet fans, Jets TE Kyle Brady and Bucs DT Warren Sapp. As reported in the NY Times, "A huge cheer went up early when WARREN SAPP tackled RICHIE ANDERSON in the first quarter. It was the first tackle for Sapp, the defensive lineman the Bucs chose first after the Jets passed on him in the draft,"

The Jets really are stupid fucks.

Wish we could say - remember the time we picked Sapp in a steal in the draft and he led us to XYZ. If any one of us were the GM that day that's what we would have done. WHY is our FO always so stupid. It's like they pick the wrong players on purpose. They are great at it.

They are great at it. i'm not so sure brady was the wrong player. he was picked way too early for what was essentially an offensive lineman. the problem with brady is he had hands of stones and seemed to always trip and fall down once he did catch the ball. and i'm also sure he was picked primarily to be a blocker which was the right type of player for kotie's offense. of course it would have helped had kotite been able to coach and if he had a qb.
