August 9, 2013The Jets traveled to Detroit to open up the pre-season for the 2013 season. 2013 was the first season for John Idzik as GM, so this game was the first chance the new GM (and Jet fans) would get to see Geno Smith in game action as he was competing with incumbent Mark Sanchez for the starting QB position. Anyone else remember that game? In typical Mark Sanchez fashion, he looked pretty good, but made the one bonehead play, making the easy look difficult on the Jets first offensive series of the new season. He failed to get enough air under a screen pass and it was intercepted and taken to the house by rookie Ziggy Ansah. Sanchez played well for the rest of the time he was in there, finishing 10 for 13 for 125 yards, including a 25 yard TD to Jeff Cumberland, but the good work he did was overshadowed by the huge mistake. Typical Sanchez. As for Geno, he was 6 for 7 for just 47 yards when his night ended prematurely after he sprained his ankle on a scramble early in the 3rd quarter. He gave way to Greg McElroy who played the rest of the way in a 26-17 loss to the Lions. As a result of the ankle injury, Geno would miss practice time as well as the 2nd pre-season game. He would return week 3 against the Giants when he won the starting job by default due to Sanchez' injury.
