August 30, 1973Emerson Boozer and Winston Hill both ended their holdouts and joined their teammates for practice on this date, August 30, 1973. Both men had been suspended by Weeb Ewbank earlier in the offseason when they refused to play without contracts. Although it would still be a few more days before either man signed their contract, they agreed to terms and returned to the practice field. John Riggins, who was also holding out, would continue his holdout into September. From the New York Times on 8/31/73: Both Boozer, the Jets second‐leading rusher last season, and Hill, an all‐star offensive tackle for seven of his 10 years in the National Football League, are believed to have agreed to terms that could go as high as $60,000 or $65,000 at the end of their multiyear pacts—a $20,000 to ‐$25,000 raise over what they each made last season.
That may sound like. a big comedown from the $100,000 apiece both were reported to be asking, but there are few Jets who have broken the $50,000‐a‐year barrier.
“I think it was the turning point in my life,” said Boozer about having Walsh negotiate for him. “I feel like this is the first time I've ever really negotiated a contract with Weeb.
“I think if I had tried to do it on my own, Weeb would've blown my mind by now,” Boozer added. “You know how tempers rise during negotiations and insulting things are said. That takes lot out of you, especially when you're also going out trying to practice every day.”
“I'm glad the whole thing is over,” said Hill. “It wasn't really as dramatic as it sounded.”
