...they'll put an end to this madness.... 13 people were killed across Chicago this Labor Day weekend as the city logged its 500th homicide of the year.
That number carries a lot of weight for the city -- not just in quantity, but in meaning: 2016 is now the deadliest year in two decades.
The Chicago Tribune reports that 51 of the 65 people shot were wounded between 6 a.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday. Nine of the fatal shootings occurred over that period.
The most recent shooting killed two people and injured three others in the city's Lawndale neighborhood. The five young men were standing on the sidewalk in the 2700 block of West Lexington Avenue when someone in a minivan opened fire towards them.
Two 22-year-old men were pronounced dead at area hospitals after being shot in the chest. The other victims, ages 16, 17 and 20, remain hospitalized in serious and critical condition. No arrests have been made in this shooting.
Another shooting in Ogden Park left two people dead as more than 100 people celebrated the Labor Day holiday. A 47-year-old man was shot in the chest while walking his dog, and a 24-year-old man was also shot in the chest as he took off running after hearing the gun shots. Both victims later died at area hospitals. No word on any arrests in this shooting.
In another shooting, a pregnant woman and her boyfriend have been hospitalized after they were wounded in a shooting on the South Side. 23-year-old Crystal Myer and 27-year-old Albert Moore were shot near 53rd and Sangamon around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the city’s Back of the Yard neighborhood. Crystal did deliver a nearly full-term baby boy at an area hospital, but remains in critical condition. No information was released on the baby's condition.
Police say the surge in violence at the end of the weekend is from retaliatory acts after a weekend of parties and tense encounters.ss....POSTED 12:32 PM, SEPTEMBER 6, 2016, BY WGN WEB DESK AND TONYA FRANCISCO, UPDATED AT 12:33PM, SEPTEMBER 6, 2016
