October 10, 1976
The 0-4 NY Jets would play host to the 2-2 Buffalo Bills at Shea Stadium on this date, October 10, back in 1976. The Jets were coming off one of the most brutal 4-game stretches in their history, being outscored 117-26 over the course of a season opening 4-game road trip. They jumped out to an early 14-0 lead behind Ed Marinaro's 1st quarter TD run and Joe Namath's 2nd quarter TD toss to back-up tight end Richard Osborne. It was Namath's first TD pass of the season, coming in week 5 and it would turn out to be the only TD of Osborne's 4-year NFL career. The game would turn out to be the best of Marinaro's career as he finished with 119 yards and the TD. The Bills would come back and tie the game in the 2nd half, after the Jets lost Namath to a minor calf strain that caused him to miss the last 2 quarters. Rookie Richard Todd struggled in relief of Namath, but he did lead a 2 minute drill that covered 50 yards, to get Pat Leahy in position to kick the game winning field 38-yard field goal in the final minute, as the Jets won to improve to 1-4 on the season. The following week, the Jets would appear on Monday Night Football for a matchup against the New England Patriots. As part of the open to that telecast, Alex Karras sang a few bars from the Jets fight song (about 4:20 mark of the video below) that Coach Holtz had penned to try to instill team spirit in the Jets. A Lou Holtz memory with the team at 1-4. Is this how far we have fallen?
