All these states are staring down the barrel at hundreds of billions in unfunded liabilities.
California recently found out what it would cost them to bring the liberal nirvana of single-payer to their state. Over $400 billion. Their current budget is around $180 billion.
Thankfully I think all states have legislation that require balanced budgets.

He works for Con Ed now. He said they had great retirement benefits and then we had a talk. I mentioned Stockton CA, and how all these states with unfderfunded pension liabilities are going too fuck tons of people. Illinois has a 250biilion unfunded pension liability and California's is 750 billion.

A file clerk, sewer worker, building inspector can work basically 10 years in NY, NJ and many places and have health insurance for life with a pension. 25 years and 55 a FULL pension. There is NO business that could survive that. None. Then the bullshot line of "I gave up a better income for these benefits". I have never met a civil servant with a skill set that would pay him or her in the private sector. In my view only LEO's and a few others deserve this type of treatment and many of them abuse it but thats a different story. A garbage man for Christ sake gets a pesnion after 20 years.

IF and that is a big if, the town is actually not going to pull the carpet out from under its workers because of an unfunded liability.
