Animals using religion as a their reason to kill shouldn't condem the entire religion. I agree but we are being deluded if we don't acknowledge that Islam has a exponentially greater problem with this than any other religion. Sadly it does appear to be. The people of Paris are doing the right thing by showing them they are not scared. |

I just read that the guy executed on the sidewalk while lying injured was also a muslim. Being an atheist I believe all dogmatic belief systems have a fundemental flaw being that they are dogmatic. However Islam goes one flaw further than most of the other religions as their fundementalists take the opinion I wrote in the previos sentence as an existential threat. The christian crazies blow up abortion clinics but I have not heard of any killing anyone simply because he stated that Christianity was a dressed up version of previous pagan rituals. However, and I understand this may be hard to believe, I do have to say sincerely that most muslims are peaceful people. It's like the Neo-Nazi's in Germany. If you look at the numbers they are very insignificant compared to the population, but their actions are so abhorrent they are a bigger problem than their numbers would indicate. Anyway this was Istanbul last night, and mind you it was below freezing here yesterday and many roads were closed had this been summer turnout would have easily been doubled.  |

Totally agreed Turk. The muslim authorities here have denounced the attack as barbaric, and have been fairly vocal since the attacks, which is a good thing IMO. They need to step up.
Pretty amazing the support shown around the globe.
Just got a pop up on my phone. Hostage situation and stand off with police is in progress...

Ugh..so currently 2 hostage situations in Paris.
- 2 guys from the newspaper attack holed up with 1 hostage
- Guy from shootout yesterday where another cop was killed (who since has been linked to the 2 other dooshbags) just raided a kosher store and has hostages

The last time Christians killed someone for heresy was supposedly around 1850 in Spain. I guess that was the last time a government sanctioned a killing for heresy. The problem with the "most Muslims are peaceful" idea is that there are 1.3 billion of them and if the estimate of 25% of them are radical or pro-radical then the nuts already outnumber the American population (to put things in perspective). ~325 Million. Most is a good estimate when you are looking at a manageable minority but when that minority is greater than the populations of most of the countries in the civilized world then we are really up against a huge problem. Only 20% of them are bad is like saying that your dog only crapped on a quarter of your pizza so the rest is still good. If other Muslims want peace with the rest of the world how about they step up and help by outing the crazies? |

Hope they get these assholes with no more loss of life. How is the mood there RD? Do you think this will result in any changes over there? Stay safe. |

Domestic/immigration policies? Mood is somber I guess. It's on everyone's minds. Special precautions are taken around schools, hospitals..etc. It's impossible to ignore. I don't live in Paris, but I'm sure a lot of people are staying home tonight. |

Yeah, I don't agree with the calculation as you're counting people like me as a muslim. I think the crazies are about %2-%3 if you count everyone whose id says they are muslim but haven't ever seen the inside of a mosque, eat pork, drink alcohol etc. Closet atheists. I also agree with Lolchuka about fear. I can tell you that I'm an atheist to you on an internet message board. But I'm too scared (smart?) to go and get a new id with the religion section left blank because I know it's going to make my life harder in every aspect if I do that. If I go one step further and declare myself an atheist I might as well just put a sign on my neck saying "cut here". I'm not going to put myself or my family in jeopardy to take a moral stand that in the end will not help anyone accomplish anything. I'm not trying to belittle what you go through in the west but trust me its a million times safer for you to tweet Je suis Charlie than I. The shootings in Paris were covered all over the globe there were rallies everywhere. There were two suicide bombs within the last 2 weeks in Istanbul. Have any of you even heard of them? Our state has a long history of making dissidents disappear. Just ask the kurds.We live with this shit every day you guys see it every once in a while. Don't get me wrong I don't wish for you or anyone to become accostomed to this behaviour but as they say you have to walk a mile in my shoes... I'd guess Israelis - and only those living in Israel not in Brooklyn - would understand the predicement of facing an invisible enemy day after day. |
