I think 20-25% is really high, but what do i know. i think the problem with muslims who want peace are scared to death (literally) to speak out against the radicals. I think the crazies are about %2-%3 if you count everyone whose id says they are muslim But I'm too scared (smart?) to go and get a new id with the religion section left blank because I know it's going to make my life harder in every aspect if I do that. If I go one step further and declare myself an atheist I might as well just put a sign on my neck saying "cut here". Your identification there states a declared religion? Such a big difference from the US - can't imagine my license or passport noting my religion.

Yes its one of the things we've been trying to get rid of but the concession we got about 10 years ago, was the ability to leave the relevant field blank. And of course to do so you have to physically go to the census office and submit a written petition that states you want to not declare your religion. Which should take half a day if lucky. Whats more is here you're required by law to carry your id on you at all times and produce the said id if required to do so by the police. They can and do make spot checks for no reason at all other than you happen to be there. Fun life huh?

Yeah, I don't agree with the calculation as you're counting people like me as a muslim. I think the crazies are about %2-%3 if you count everyone whose id says they are muslim but haven't ever seen the inside of a mosque, eat pork, drink alcohol etc. Closet atheists. I also agree with Lolchuka about fear. I can tell you that I'm an atheist to you on an internet message board. But I'm too scared (smart?) to go and get a new id with the religion section left blank because I know it's going to make my life harder in every aspect if I do that. If I go one step further and declare myself an atheist I might as well just put a sign on my neck saying "cut here". I'm not going to put myself or my family in jeopardy to take a moral stand that in the end will not help anyone accomplish anything. I'm not trying to belittle what you go through in the west but trust me its a million times safer for you to tweet Je suis Charlie than I. The shootings in Paris were covered all over the globe there were rallies everywhere. There were two suicide bombs within the last 2 weeks in Istanbul. Have any of you even heard of them? Our state has a long history of making dissidents disappear. Just ask the kurds. We live with this shit every day you guys see it every once in a while. Don't get me wrong I don't wish for you or anyone to become accostomed to this behaviour but as they say you have to walk a mile in my shoes... I'd guess Israelis - and only those living in Israel not in Brooklyn - would understand the predicement of facing an invisible enemy day after day. Yes it is definitely worse there and in Israel. No question there but that is one of the great things about our separation of church and state. Thankfully I don't think there will be a majority here that would ever look to overturn that. At least I hope not.

Apparently the US didn't send any high-ranking officials to Paris for the event. What a disgrace.

Apparently the US didn't send any high-ranking officials to Paris for the event. What a disgrace. I don't blame them. Terrorism isn't fought with marches. The march was really really freaking lame.
