Let's look at some of the assholes that went: King Abdullah of Jordan, which last year sentenced a Palestinian journalist to 15 years in prison with hard labour. Prime Minister of Davutoglu of Turkey, which imprisons more journalists than any other country in the world. Foreign Minister Shoukry of Egypt, which as well as AJ staff has detained journalist Shawkan for around 500 days. Foreign Minister Lavrov of Russia, which last year jailed a journalist for "insulting a government servant" Foreign Minister Lamamra of Algeria, which has detained journalist Abdessami Abdelhai for 15 months without charge. Prime Minister Jomaa of Tunisia, which recently jailed blogger Yassine Ayan for 3 years for "defaming the army" The PMs of Georgia and Bulgaria, both of whom have a record of attacking & beating journos. Prime Minister Samaras of Greece, where riot police beat & injured two journalists at a protest in June last year. Sec-Gen of NATO, who are yet to be held to account for deliberately bombing and killing 16 Serbian journos in '99. The Foreign Minister of Bahrain, 2nd biggest jailer of journos in the world per capita (they also torture them). Sheikh Mohamed Ben Hamad Ben Khalifa Al Thani of Qatar, which jailed a man for 15 ys for writing the Jasmine poem. Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas, who had several journalists jailed for insulting him in 2013. Prime Minister Cerar of Slovenia, which sentenced a blogger to six months in prison for "defamation" in 2013. Prime Minister Kopacz of Poland, which raided a magazine to seize recordings embarrassing for the ruling party. Saudi ambassador to France. The Saudis publicly flogged a blogger for "insulting Islam" on Friday. Just the people to stand in "solidarity" with.... Leaders!!!!!!!

Of course he was there, he's already in the frigging country. As for the rest; that comes across as gifting for the excusal of bad parenting. Paying someone's way doesn't excuse our not sending POTUS, veep or the SoS to attend. We're supposed to be a world leader, THE world leader to hear some tell it, yet our leadership felt it was okay to act in a boorish manner and not show up. This march wasn't about the USA it was about Paris. If the President would have attended everyone would be screaming it's not about him. Revisionist excuse that seems to be making the rounds since the WH said they made a misstep in not sending someone. Was it all about the British or German PMs then? Or was it about all the nations who sent high-level dignitaries showing solidarity in the face of a heinous act? Just like Spiderman, the POTUS carries great responsibility with all that perceived power. Again, he's a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and the "leader of the free world"; his presence would've been overwhelmingly well-received.

Everyone hates him and had he attended, people would have said he as using a solemn event to draw attention away from other scandals at home.
And Europeans do nothing but piss and moan about our country.

We're supposed to be a world leader, THE world leader to hear some tell it, yet our leadership felt it was okay to act in a boorish manner and not show up. Perhaps. How many Europeans showed up here to march after 9/11 or the Marathon bombings? Fair point. So does that mean there's some sort of Euro-USA disconnect when it comes to support for terroristic actions? This a very weak spin attempt at best. I am OK with POTUS not attending b.c of security concerns but Uncle Joe or the kept man should have been there. One of those three should have been there. It's a huge outrage. There's no pleasing you guys when it comes to what the President should or shouldn't do. There's a great quote by Giuliani concerning the weeks and months following 9/11 that goes something like "weddings are optional; funerals are mandatory." Like DD said, there's something to the logistics of getting POTUS to attend at a short notice, but one of the others could've been sent. As for the rest of it; I'll admit, it stuck in my craw that POTUS couldn't even issue a live statement from his vacay in Hawaii when those two cops got executed. I felt the press release was a bit disrespectful, especially considering the hoops he jumped through concerning what were for him clear activist issues like Ferguson or the Trayvon Martin case. Guess those cawps and the ones in France (along with all those innocent people) aren't worth his undivided attention. As a LEO I'd expect you to feel somewhat similarly, but as always you let political allegiance curry your standards. I believe you are referencing critiques about who he has handled the police shootings. Its actually quite simple. When you are POTUS, you are POTUS for everyone so don't let your activist nature get the best of you and fan flames. There is a time and place for politics. And when there is an international tragedy it should be met with some sort of courtesy and respect. Not having one of the 3 there is classless IMO. One could argue the majority of leaders showed becuase of politics. Absolutely, hence my "keeping up appearances" out. And staying true to form, this administration continues its aloofness with regards to appearance on the foreign stage. Good job. Let's look at some of the assholes that went: King Abdullah of Jordan, which last year sentenced a Palestinian journalist to 15 years in prison with hard labour. The Saudis publicly flogged a blogger for "insulting Islam" on Friday. Just the people to stand in "solidarity" with.... Well, between the IRS fiasco as well as the Benghazi and Fast and Furious obfuscation, to say nothing of the CPJ Report that was less than favorable about how the current administration treats journalists, we would have fit right in. Seriously guys, this is less about Obama and more about "doing the right thing" here. As the big kid on the block, we look like dicks not sending someone. Forget the politics, this is bigger than that.

My iPad won't let me reply to your big post. I have never cared about any politicians words or views when it comes to my job. They are all out for themselves. I have voted for persons from every party, I vote on the issues. I think DeBlasio is a buffoon as well. I rather DeBlasio didn't speak to be honest. Would you really of wanted Holder to show up there?

But one of the big 3 would've been acceptable. I guess best balance of sincerity vs logistics would have been Kerry. Where was he keeping himself busy Sunday?
