Here’s some great news. After 6 years of dialysis treatments, 3 days a week for close to 5 hours a pop..I received a kidney transplant last Thursday. The kidney was donated by a good friend in Los Angeles on Wednesday, flown cross country on the red eye, and implanted in me on Thursday. I’m pleased to report that it is functioning well. I’m up…and walking laps around the hospital corridors. With any luck I will be released today or tomorrow. Truly the best birthday gift, ever.
The sad thing is every day in this country, 21 people perish awaiting a transplant from a deceased donor. I signed up to be an organ donor at 17, with my first driver’s license. Never thought that I would need one…but that’s life. If you haven’t done it, and are physically able to do it, consider becoming a donor upon your demise. End of plea!
Next for me? Drugs and more drugs. Immuno suppression drugs. Anti biotics, Anti fungal drugs. Steroids. Pain relief drugs. (Although pain hasn’t been a huge challenge for me. Took one oxy conten (Sic?), and was done.
But taking a few pills daily kicks the ass of going to the death factory called dialysis.
I’m back MF’ers!!!

My BIL was on dialysis and eventually died before getting a replacement. I'm really glad you got one as dialysis sucks but it's better than the alternative. |

I don't think many people fully appreciate just how amazing an organ the kidney is (liver too). The amount of heavy lifting involved and how they impact so many different systems is fascinating. Out of curiosity what does this mean for your friend? What kind of complications, if any, has he accepted by doing this? Well, my friend is a she. (Just a friend). I was on the phone with her around the holidays. That morning I had a really difficult dialysis session, which I told her about. She wanted to know what could be done. I told her I need a transplant…and she volunteered on the spot. I asked her to think about it, speak with her husband and son. Expected to hear from her in a couple of weeks…she calls me the next day. Let’s do this. She began testing immediately. Turned out to be a match…and we were on! She lives in Los Angeles and donated at UCLA Med Center. I live outside of Philly, I was transplanted at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Logistically, she donated on Wed afternoon. The kidney was loaded on a redeye to Philly, my surgery was scheduled for 5 hours. As for complications, she has had some issues with nausea post surgery. Thankfully they seem to be residing. Long term, she is living with one kidney. Not a problem unless something bad was to happen to it. Some scarring on her side/back. That’s about it. |
