Interesting they hire an assistant WR coach to be the guy to coach up the QB with the Jets. He was with Gailey in Buffalo for three years.

On the face of it this seems like a very risky move, especially given that our QB needs serious coaching and improvement. How is a first-time QB coach going to do that?

I really see Gailey being the glorified QB coach and Patullo helping him out. Not overly concerned about the hire, he could be learning on the job and could become an effective position coach.

Agreed, my guess is that Gailey will be the de facto QB coach.

Yeah, this. Bowles isn't a stupid guy and probably realized that Geno needs a lot of work. Gailey has shown to get a lot out of QBs in the past so I would only assume that he'll be mostly in charge of developing Geno. All this Patullo guy will do is fetch coffee for Gailey in the morning.

It says the following on Patullo on the Bills site:
He coordinates the club’s offensive self-scouting duties and is responsible for computer analysis, statistical and video breakdowns of opponents on a weekly basis.
I think he will do a lot of the analytical work for Gailey as he tries to get Geno on the right track or whomever will be the QB.

Note that our WR coach, Karl Dorrell, also has experience as a QB coach.
So we got Gailey, a jack of all trades with QB and WR coaching experience, a WR coach with QB coaching experience and a QB coach with WR coaching experience. Verrrrrry interesting.

I'd rather have someone with experience, but he is a former QB.
The transition from different positions as a coach isn't too uncommon. Belidick was once a wide receiver coach.

I keep thinking of the Pep Hamilton situation when I look at this hire.
No-one had heard of young Pep when we hired him as a quality control coach and then elevated him to coach QBs a year later. And he has done pretty well since then.
Gailey knew this guy from his college career and brought him to Buffalo as a coach, so he clearly knows all about his abilities. This one is all on Chan but, if he is that confident in Patullo, then that's good enough for me.

The Jets have confirmed Patullo as QB coach, Steve Marshall (Packers) as O-line coach and Marcel Shipp (ex-Cards RB) as RB coach.

And wasn't John Harbaugh a Special Teams coach who Andy Reid eventually put in charge of the Defensive Backs as well just so that he'd get on the Head Coach radar a little bit easier?

Always liked rooting for Shipp, a local kid out of Patterson. Glad he's with us now.
