*All of these free agent signing, extensions and re-structures were all approved by fanspeak. These are not arbitrary numbers that I just made up.*
Cuts
HB Chris Johnson---Saved $3.75 million
WR TJ Graham---Saved $660,000
OLB Jason Babin---Saved $1.5 million
TE Jeff Cumberland---Saved $1.9 million
Re-Signed
Wilkerson (Extended): 6 yr $48 millon 19.2 guaranteed
*This is a no-brainer. The extension starts following the 2015 season. He's considered a 3-4 DT which drops his price considerably. That's not something I had previously thought about. The highest paid 3-4 DT in the league makes $8.8 million, the next highest is $6 million per year.
Bilal Powell: 3 yr $3.75 million 937,500 guaranteed
*Quality depth for cheap price
Legere Douzable: 3 yr $6 million 1.2 guaranteed
*Quality depth for cheap price
Kenrick Ellis: 4 yr $10 million 2.5 guaranteed
*Quality depth for cheap price
Nick Bellore: 3 yr $3.75 million 937,500 guaranteed
*Quality depth for cheap price
Tanner Purdum: 3 yr $3.75 million 937,500 guaranteed
*Only long snapper on the Jets for a while now. It makes sense to lock him up for a few more years.
Damon Harrison (Extended): 5 yr $20 million 4.0 guaranteed
*Extension starts in 2015. Very good starting DT for Bowles system
Percy Harvin (Re-structured) Saved $4.5 million: 3 yr $18 million 5.4 guaranteed
*If Harvin will restructure this makes total sense. The top WR (Cobb) will get near $12 million per year. Too rich for the Jets. Low risk move, cuttable contract after year 1.
Nick Folk (Re-Structured) Saved $900,000: 3 yr $5.25 million 525,000 guaranteed
*Restructuring this contract is a good idea. Very good kicker with fair price tag.
Free Agent Signings
QB Ryan Mallet: 3 yr $7.5 million 1.5 guaranteed
*Fills a need. He's young and has a lot of upside. Good competition for Geno
QB Jake Locker: 3 yr $6 million 2.4 guaranteed
*Fills a need. He's young and has a lot of upside. Good competition for Geno
HB LaMichael James: 3 yr $4.5 million 1.35 guaranteed
*Kick Returner/Punt Returner. 3rd down receiving back in a pinch. Very explosive
HB Justin Forsett: 3 yr $13.5 million 5.4 guaranteed
*HB 1B with Ivory. Catches the ball real well and is a perfect compliment to Ivory
TE Matt Spaeth: 2 yr $4 million 2.0 guaranteed
*A very good blocking TE. Perfect compliment to the TE's we have on the roster already. Best blocking TE we've had in a while.
RT Byron Stingily: 3 yr $7.5 million 2.25 guaranteed
*Young RT with some promise. Good depth at RT in case Giacomini decides to be terrible again.
G Clint Boling: 6 yr $39 million 15.6 guaranteed
*One of the top 2 guards on the market. Fills a huge hole at LG and allows Aboushi/Winters the chance to play opposite him. It also puts a very good Guard next to Mangold and DBrick for the first time in years. It will help them immensely going forward.
Defense
OLB Sam Acho: 4 yr $16 million 6.4 guaranteed
*Already familiar with the system from his time in Arizona with Bowles. Fills a need at OLB and can rush the passer some.
OLB O'Brien Schofield: 4 yr $12.0 million 3.6 guaranteed
*Drafted to play OLB with the Cardinals. Had most of his success as a 3-4 OLB. Signed by Seahawks and moved to DE where he struggled. He should be happy to move back to OLB and rush the passer.
ILB Casey Matthews: 3 yr $4.5 million 1.35 guaranteed
*Adds depth to the ILB group which it's lacking.
ILB Brad Jones: 3 yr $10.5 million 3.675 guaranteed
*Brad Jones had an off year in 2014 but the 2 years before that he average 80 tackles and 2.5 sacks from the ILB position. Can be slotted next to Davis with no issues.
CB Perish Cox: 3 yr $12 million 3.6 guaranteed
*Very good depth signing. Could potentially start over Milliner if he doesn't get his shit together. Cox is very familiar with man to man coverage and is an above average CB. Even if he doesn't start it adds depth to the most important position on Bowles defense.
CB Tramon Williams: 3 yr $20.1 million 8.04 guaranteed
*Here is the #1 CB signing that we wanted last year. He's 31 years old that why its only a 3 year deal but he has plenty of left and is a very good man coverage guy. He can match up with the other teams #1 and will finally strengthen our CB position. With Cox, Williams, Milliner and McDougle the Jets would have very good depth at the CB position for a change.
FS Rahim Moore: 4 yr $26 million 10.4 guaranteed
*He is exactly what the Jets need; a cover free safety. The moves at CB and FS will allow the Jets to employ Pryor the way he was drafted to play. An in the box thumper who scares ball carriers and WR's coming across the middle. The 2 additions at CB and this signing of Moore will make the Jets secondary a strength.
All these signings, extensions, cuts and re-structures leave the team with $24.6 million dollars in cap space. It's very hard to spend the amount that we will have on free agents. You may see the Jets front load a lot of contracts in order to spend to what they need to spend to stay in compliance with the NFL rules regarding the salary cap threshold. Doing that will also make the Jets more attractive to some of the better free agents in the league. Money talks as we all know. I'm going to do a draft on First-Pick and add it to this a little later with all of these moves in mind.
First-Pick Draft Results
*Traded 6th overall pick to the Eagles for their 1st (20), 2nd (52) and 3rd (84)*
1(20) WR Louisville DeVante Parker
*Possible future #1 WR. Make a top 4 of Decker, Harvin, Parker and Kerley. Very good depth and dangerous
2(5) OLB Virginia Eli Harold
*Very good pass rusher and a perfect fit as a 3-4 OLB. The pass rusher we've been waiting for.
2(20) QB Baylor Bryce Petty
*Very good QB prospect. Good size (6'3" 230 lbs). Strong arm.
3(6) RT Texas A&M Cedric Ogbuehi
*He's a bulldozer at RT or RG. He's played both positions so if need be the Jets could slide him inside. Some have him going in the late 1st.
3(20) C Boston College Andy Gallik
*This would be Mangolds replacement in 2-3 years. Very good center with huge upside.
4(5) HB Minnesota David Cobb
*He's built like Ivory and with Ivory being in his last year of his deal this could be his replacement.
5(6) WR Miami(Fla) Phillip Dorsett
*He's a burner and can blow the top off of a defense. He'll fit nice in the slot or on the outside. Adds more depth to an all of a sudden strong WR group.
7(5) ILB UCF Terrance Plummer
*Good late value at a position of need. He can be a serviceable back up for both ILB spots.
