Patrick Willis to announce retirement
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis is planning to announce his retirement Tuesday, sources confirmed to ESPN.
Patrick Willis appeared in just six games in 2014 before having season-ending toe surgery. Willis' decision to retire was reported earlier Monday by Yahoo! Sports.
According to unconfirmed reports, longtime 49ers defensive lineman Justin Smith also plans to retire Tuesday.
Willis, 30, appeared in just six games in 2014 before undergoing season-ending toe surgery. After being placed on injured reserve in November, he acknowledged that the chronic injury to his left big toe had been hampering him for years.
But Willis made no indication at the time that he was considering retirement, saying he had "five or six years left in my body. ... When I come back, I will be bigger and better than I was."
Willis has played his entire eight-year career in San Francisco and was one of the top players on the 49ers teams that reached three consecutive NFC Championship Games from 2011 to 2013.
He was selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first seven NFL seasons. The only defensive players since the league's 1970 merger with longer streaks to start their careers were Lawrence Taylor (11) and Derrick Thomas (9).
Smith, 35, has split his 14-year career between San Francisco and the Cincinnati Bengals. The five-time Pro Bowler recorded 87 sacks, including five last season, in 221 career games.
ESPN.com 49ers reporter Paul Gutierrez contributed to this report.

Wow, didn't see this coming at all. He was, and still is, a game-changing player. When is the last time an elite player retired so early? Barry Sanders?

Maurice Jones-Drew just retired at 29. Maybe not as elite as Willis, but was pretty good.

Can't blame the guy. His health is worth money than a few more million. He made his money.

A surprise. I felt like he was just drafted. Very good player.

and the complete folding of the 49rs begin. I can't wait to go to work and see my 49rs fan boss try to talk it away like they didn't need him.

It's a tough game. Imagine having to reinvent yourself at the age of 30? Football players are the last true gladiators. They sacrifice everything to entertain us, fatass Americans who waste valuable oxygen, only to turn it quickly into methane. Pass the nachos.

Good for him. Hopefully he got out before he suffers from any debilitating, long term ailments.
Niners are really getting stripped post Harbaugh. Willis, Justin Smith (I believe?), Crabtree, Iaputi, Gore.

Good for Willis though. Hope he was smart with his money, and he walks away without dementia.

Imagine having to reinvent yourself at the age of 30? 30? That's really not THAT hard to imagine.

Hopefully he has some cash set aside and he can support himself. It has to be tough going out in the middle of a big career due to injuries when he could probably try to push it and get at least another year or two out of the game.
