be careful about the more studies aspect. more studies doesn't mean the incidence is higher or the concussions are worse. all it means is they are doing more studies. too much garbage coming out of the study world. I just meant we never heard about this before because no one studied it. personally I don't need a study, one look at some of the players over 50 convinces me. Given that you didn't play in the NFL, what's your excuse?

I have no idea what Chris Borland's family has a far as wealth, but kids that come from poverty are normally going to risk permanent injury for the opportunity to amass large amounts of wealth. When I was in the military, a lot of the guys that I served with enlisted because they really didn't have many other opportunities in life. With professional sports, you are talking about the chance to dwarf any sort of income you could ever hope to receive in the vast majority of careers.

I'll be worried about the future of football when highly recruited HS Seniors choose not to pursue a free education via Football Scholarship.
I'll be worried when 3rd round draft prospects start retiring from the NFL prior to making a penny.
I respect Borland for doing what he thinks is best for him, but lots of people are acting like what he did was heroic or some act of bravery. He has made in 1 year what it takes an average Anerican 15 years or more to make. He can now fall back on the free education he received and go one with his professional career without a shred of debt.

I in no way think football is going away but I think we will see a drop in participation. Obviously football is a religion in a lot of areas of the country. Also, he earned his education, it wasn't free.

I wasn't necessarily saying people on here were pulling the bravery card, more on the Twitter. Point taken that he earned his education, but the tuition was free.

Roger Goodell needs to go, if only for the fact that he's buddy-buddy with Kraft and gives the Flats* more unfair advantages than any other team in sports receives. How long as has it been since Deflate-Gate, and yet no ruling or punishment for Belidick and New England? Yet the Jets get hammered with a potential tampering charge? It's funny how NE can commit the most egregious cases of cheating and get away with it, all because that old fucking piece of shit Kraft has a greedy spinless commissioner in his back pocket. Goodell is the worst commisioner in the history of all professional sports. Bar none. Oh yeah, and also the fact that Goodell is watering down the NFL. That too. Good luck with that. The Commish works for the owners. Under his leadership the NFL has made a gazillion billiondy dollars. They couldn't care less about balls or tampering. (BTW...how long has it been since tampering charges? Why has nothing been done!!!!!) You are so afraid of him being ousted it's hilarious. I genuinely belly-lol over it.

Yeah, Just like boxing or UFC, it will end. Americans hate violence in their sports and that's why Cricket will become it's national pastime. :rolleyesfuckingagain: "Do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again." - Richard Branson Have you played cricket? There's more violence in it than you might think. A former Australian national player was hit in the head by a cricket ball while batting last year. Died in hospital.

This is certainly a problem for the NFL. If star players start retiring early that will create long term problems finding franchise players and it's definitely going to affect how teams structure contracts for key players to ensure they either play out their contracts or give up huge chunks of cash. It's good to see more players think about their health and not treat the NFL like an endless cash cow. Maybe we will see more players making smarter financial moves with all that money. It's interesting how this has become a two way street. The NFL has never taken "contracts" seriously, players are disposable pieces that can be cut at any time. Interesting to see the shoe on the other foot. Does Borland owe the team anything? They can demand he pays back some of his signing bonus but they won't. Too much bad karma.

The salary cap will be $160 million dollars in the next couple years, you have good, not great players making 7-10 million dollars a year. Salaries will be increasing at a steady pace, there will not be a shortage of players who are going to be willing to take that money. One or two guys out of 1,600 current NFL players retiring early does not suggest a beginning of the end. For every Chris Borland, there are thousands of others that are willing to play for that money and fame.

Also, he earned his education, it wasn't free. There should be a drop in participation. IMO there are a lot of kids playing football who are only doing so because their father wants to live life vicariously through them. I have watched this every year. I would say roughly 30% of the kids out there don't really want to be out there playing. It's obvious by the way they play and the effort they give that they would rather be doing something else. Then you see their parents on the sideline at practice yelling at them to try harder, hit harder, run faster, it's nauseating to watch that everyday. A drop in participation would be a benefit to youth football.
