How does it work? Whoever contacts the player first? Player can choose who he wants to sign with if he has multiple offers.

How does it work? Whoever contacts the player first? They're free agents and teams have a limited amount of money too sign them. This is the time when you're GM turns into a salesman for players they were high on but neglected to draft. There is always udfa gems out there. Think Damon Harrison, Mike Devito, and Bart Scott when he came out.

Are they free to attend other camps as well? Assuming there's no contract involved in this

Are they free to attend other camps as well? Assuming there's no contract involved in this These type of players are beyond the fringe of the fringe players. I wouldn't look too much into it but as of now they will be locked into the Jets unless they quit or the Jets get rid of them. Edit to add: They are basically on a try-out basis looking for some type of a signing bonus. I can't recall any of them ever panning out.

RobR is referring to guys who are not signed to a contract but are invited to rookie mini-camp for a tryout. They rarely stick with a team. From his wiki Despite his collegiate success, the 5'10" Chrebet was not regarded as an NFL prospect, and went undrafted in the 1995 NFL Draft. He secured a tryout for the Baltimore Stallions of Canadian Football League, but was cut after one day. Chrebet's big break came when he was granted a walk-on opportunity with the NFL's New York Jets, who at the time trained at Hofstra's campus. His chances of remaining on the team for long were nothing short of astronomical: he entered training camp 11th of 11 on the Jets' wide receiver depth chart; NFL teams rarely carry more than five receivers into the season.

Sounds like he was a try out player that eventually secured a signing bonus and then made the 53. It is so rare I was about to ask if anyone could recall one of them who panned out and our very own Chrebet was one of them if his wiki is correct. If I had to wager a guess, I would say for every 200 try-out type players only one of them would land on a 53 man roster, and 1 in a million would have the type of career Chrebet had. Wayne stepped into a very good situation when I believe Stevie Johnson was considered our #1 going into camp. Remember him? Anyone have clarification on Waynes status? I honestly don't know.
