It's amazing how the pendulum has swung. Eric Mangini was way too uptight, too rigid and a disciplinarian who demanded accountability. The players didn't play hard for him and got sick of the Fort Knox approach to managing the team. Enter Rex Ryan, the loud, in your face, unsophisticated over-communicator who made players his buddy and got guys to run through walls for him...but sometimes he was pointing to the wrong wall. So now we swing the pendulum back and hopefully find a sweet spot in the middle. We want a loose, relaxed and energetic group of guys like Rex had but we want them held accountable and to know that their actions have consequences, that there are expectations for how they'll act and perform. Let's hope Todd Bowles is the guy who can take what we liked about Mangini and what we liked about Rex while discarding the unexpected consequences we got with each! so far Bowles could be the black Mangini, just wait until he says it's a process

I see what you are doing here Jet Nut... defending Bradway and Rex Not defending either one of them. Rex especially, he had to go. If Bowles becomes a great HC or not doesn't change that and doesn't make Rex a better HC than he was at the end of his run.

Rex is a good guy and very good defensive mind. But IMO Rex's personality and coaching style are not built for longevity. Simple as that. To me his style of coaching, his players are accountable to themselves and their teammates works much better with a veteran team like he had in is first two seasons and not so well with a young roster that needs discipline and guidance

I almost threw up in my mouth when Rex received a gatorade bath after finishing 4-12.
When you're winning, he's awesome.
When you're not, he's fucking ridiculous.
Of course players started to tune him out. Who wants to hear all of that rah-rah silly bullshit when you know that the team sucks and that you're underperforming?
This team was 2-11 at one point last year and he was still spewing goofy bullshit like "I can tell you this...no team wants to play us...I promise you that".
Newflash you fucking mo-mo, EVERYONE wants to play you when you're 2-11.

Actually helping and guiding players along...you know, COACHING them? If your only success is with players who are doing their own thing and don't need help from you that's not much of a coach IMO, more of a game planner or coordinator than anything else.

When you're winning, he's awesome. When you're not, he's fucking ridiculous. This is pretty much true of any coach on either extreme side of the spectrum. The classic hard ass disciplinarian act also gets old and tuned out too when you dont win. Hopefully Bowles is that happy medium - rules and discipline combined with positive mentoring. You can have rules without being a hard ass, and you can be a players coach without them walking all over you, you just have to balance it out. Not a lot of head coaches find that balance.

In a sense but we all know that a coach can't be both a hard ass and a buddy, buddy coach at the same time in a room. And he can go from a best friend to a hard ass. More to the point he is what he is. Belluchick can't become a Rex type HC and Rex can't become like Bill

I was going to bring that up last night, but didn't want to give SAR any credit. I think he used a star analogy, something along the lines of the brightest stars burn out the fastest. That's exactly what happened.

Yeah that dumbfuck also said his boy Sanchez was a superstar. I wonder if he still has his Eagles jersey.
Or maybe he is mad at Chip for undermining his gay fantasy love Mark by bringing in Tebow???

I will await judgment until after the season (seen this too many times in 45 years). So far both GM and Coach seem to be making all the right moves.
