Before punching Geno Smith, ex-Jets LB IK Enemkpali attacked a police officer in 2011
IK Enemkpali’s fists have gotten him in trouble before.
The former Jets linebacker whose sucker punch has put Geno Smith on the sidelines for six to 10 weeks was charged with battery on a police officer in 2011. The 6-1, then 255-pound Enemkapali was hit with pepper spray and tasered in the incident.
Enemkpali, then a college football player at Louisiana Tech, punched a police officer in the face because the cop, working as a security guard at a local bar called Rabb's Steakhouse, refused to let Enemkpali's underage friend into the nightspot.
Arcadia, La, police officer Hezekiah Perry said Enemkpali became argumentative and tried to punch the 6-2, 280-pound cop.
Perry responded to Enemkpali's swing-and-a-miss by firing pepper spray at Enemkpali.
A Lincoln Parish Sheriff's deputy who had responded to a 911 call about the incident said he saw Enemkpali, still struggling from the pepper spray, take another shot at the moonlighting office, this time hitting him in the face.
The deputy, Jeremy Johnson, reported that he "deployed his Taser device" and took Enemkpali into custody.
Enemkpali, who police said smelled like alcohol, was also charged with disturbing the peace by appearing intoxicated in public.
Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes suspended Enemkpali from the team after the incident.
Prosecutors later amended the charges to simple battery. Enemkpali pleaded no contest to the charge in 2012 and was sentenced to 13 months of probation and ordered to take a anger management course, according to Lincoln Parish court records.
The Jets were aware of the incident when they selected him in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL draft.
"If I knew what I know now, I would've gotten myself out of that situation," Enemkpali told ESPN last year. "I lost my cool. That's what it was."
Enemkpali appeared in six games for the Jets last year and was competing for a roster spot for the 2015 season. link
