August 25, 1969 Busy day in Jet history. I will start with the roster cuts. To trim the roster for the 1969 season, the Jets would release 7 players, including 4 veterans from teh prior year's Super Bowl team. DB Johnny Sample Johnny Sample played in 3 of the most memorable games in NFL/AFL History. Starting his rookie yeaar witht he Colts in 1958, he played in the NFL Championship Game against the Giants. A game won by the Colts, 23-17 in overtime on Alan Ameche's game winning TD run. This game is often referred to as the greatest game ever played. As a member of the Jets, he played in the Heidi game in Nov 1968, and finished his career in Super Bowl III - adding an interception to help the Jets beat his former team 16-7. Sample is the only player ever to win an NFL Championship, an AFL Championship and a Super Bowl. DE Paul Rochester Paul Rochester was a starting Defensive Lineman for the Jets. He began his career with the Dallas Texans in the AFL's inaugural season in 1960 and joined the Jets in 63. He was part of a great Jets defensive line, often the forgotten man in a line that included Gerry Philbin, John Elliott and Verlon Biggs. Rochester is a member of the AFL Hall of Fame and is one of only 20 players to play the entire 10 years of the AFL's existence. Despite bbeing released on this date, Rochester would return to the Jets for the 1969 season. Also released on this date were back-up RB Billy Joe and Punter Curley Johnson. Joe was the 1963 AFL Rookie of the Year with the Broncos. He was acquired by the Jets prior to the 67 season, but found himself buried on the depth chart behind Emerson Boozer, Matt Snell and Bill Mathis and saw little playing time in his 2 years with the Jets. Curely Johnson was a Jets punter for 8 of his 10 pro football seasons. He was a member of the Dallas Texans in 1960 as a rookie and he finished his career with the Giants in 1969.

Also on this date:
8/25/1990: The Jets signed 1st round draft pick (2nd overall pick) Blair Thomas to a series of one year contracts. Thomas never came close to living up to his draft position, never gaining more than 720 yards in a season. He was taken one pick ahead of HOFer Cortez Kennedy and 3 picks ahead of HOFer Junior Seau.
8/25/2014: This date last year the Jets suspended CB Dimitri Patterson for failing to show up for their preseason game with the Giants several days earlier. He would be released several days later and never played a game for the Jets. Another great move by John Idzik. Had he been our GM for more than 2 years, we probably could have had a John Idzik bad move of the Day thread.

(And by thanks I mean what the fuck is dis shit? A "This is Your Life" show where people from the past come up and kick you in the nuts???) Isn't that what being a Jet fan is all about -- feeling like you are getting kicked in the nuts every Sunday. All I am doing here is trying to make every day feel like a football Sunday. In most cases, that would be a good thing.

If you're constantly getting kicked in the nuts then after a while its almost like you're not getting kicked in the nuts at all... or you just start to enjoy the pain...the sweet, wonderful, nauseous, gut-wrenching pain...
