August 29, 2002Curtis Martin signs a contract extension. The extension was a 5 year deal deal worth $30 million and $18.4 million in guarantees, with a team option for an additional 3 years at $16 million. Martin's comments at the time as reported in the NY Times, 'They constantly say, 'Curtis, we're glad to do this,' '' Martin said. ''That gives me such a great feeling. They seem to be happier than I am. They say I deserve it. It humbles me...People say good guys never win,'' he would go on to say. ''I'm from the belief that's not true. I really believe to whom much is given, much is required. This is a huge responsibility.'' Curtis Martin was always a class act. He would lead the league in rushing for the Jets in the 2004 season with nearly 1,700 yards and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He would retire after the 2005 season and is currently the 4th leading All Time rusher in NFL history. Contrast him with the other guy to get paid on this date, albeit with a franchise tender, rather than a long term deal.

August 29, 2005John Abraham signs a one-year $6.7 million franchise tender. Abraham had been a great player for the Jets after being drafted in the first round of the 2000 draft. He was All Pro in 2001 with 13 sacks and had a total of 43 sacks in his first 5 seasons through 2004. Despite his on field production, the Jets were hesitant to offer a long term deal to Abraham who had struggled to stay healthy during those first 5 seasons, missing 23 games to injury. His relationship with the team and the fans really soured during the 2004 post season. He suffered a knee injury in December, but was cleared by team doctors to play in the wild card playoffs against San Diego. He refused to play, instead saying he needed to "weigh his options". "I have no more challenges with the media. I've been through everything I possibly could," he said. "I've been called an alcoholic, I've been called a drunk, I've been called a coward for not playing because I was hurt. I've been called a guy who gets injured all the time. Anything possible pretty much that could be said bad about me has been said." Abraham left the Jets following the 2005 season when he was traded to the Falcons. The Jets used the draft pick received from the Falcons to select Nick Mangold in the 2006 draft. He is 10th on the NFL's All Time sack list with 133.5.

Wish we had a RB with half the consistency of Curt Given the opportunity, maybe Ivory can be that guy. I would love to see what he could do with 250-300 carries a year. I think he has only averaged about 12 carries a game for us. If he carries 18-20 times a game, I think he can be a 1,200 - 1,400 yard a year guy. If he is durable enough to handle the load.
