FLORHAM PARK — Stevan Ridley's Jets debut will come Sunday at the Raiders.
Ridley, a running back coming off a torn ACL sustained last year, was activated from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Friday afternoon, just before the Jets took off on their cross-country flight to Oakland, Calif., for Sunday's game.
In a corresponding move, the Jets waived/injured wide receiver Chris Owusu, who had already been ruled out with a concussion.
Earlier this week, Ridley told NJ Advance Media's Darryl Slater he was "ready to play." Head coach Todd Bowles had said earlier in the week that Ridley could be activated if running back Bilal Powell (ankle) was unable to play again.
Bowles on Friday officially ruled Powell out. All signs pointed to Ridley being ready to go. Then came the official word.
"I mean, he's full speed," Bowles said. "This is his second week of practice, [and] he's made a lot of progress."
With Ridley on the 53-man roster, the Jets will go to Oakland with three running backs—Chris Ivory and Zac Stacy are the others—plus fullback Tommy Bohnanon. Ivory had been slowed last week by hamstring tightness, but he practiced in full all week and said he felt fine for Sunday.
Ridley was eligible to come off PUP last week and had traveled to Sunday's game at the Patriots, his former team. He even spent the game on the Jets' sideline. And while the Jets considered activating him for that game, they ultimately decided to wait.
Ridley hasn't played in more than a year. He tore his ACL and MCL in Week 6 (Oct.12) of last season, when he was with the Patriots, who drafted him in the 2011 third round out of LSU.
In 2012, as the Patriots' feature back, Ridley rushed 290 times for 1,263 yards and 12 touchdowns.
PLUS: Jets did not ask NFL to sweep for bugs at Patriots
The Jets signed Ridley in April to a one-year deal that included $750,000 in base salary, plus an $80,000 signing bonus. But they knew he'd need time to get up to speed, which is why his deal was also structured to include $21,875 in per-game roster bonuses whenever he became active.
Owusu, who is primarily a kickoff returner, has sustained several concussions dating back to his college days at Stanford, and this one was his second this season. He likely will revert to injured reserve if he goes unclaimed.
Special teams coach Bobby April said this week Stacy would be the kickoff return man against the Raiders.
